The Beijing-Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway Is the Longest High-Speed Rail Line in the World

On September 23, 2018, the 36 km-long (22.37 miles) Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border section of the Beijing-Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway was inaugurated. The opening of this section also marked the completion of the Beijing-Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway, also known as the Jingguangshengang High-Speed Railway or Jingguang High-Speed Railway for short.

With a total length of 2,230 km (1,390 miles), the Jingguang High-Speed Railway is the longest high-speed line in the world. When the line was completed, its operating speed of 350 km/h (220 mph) reduced the travel time between Beijing and Hong Kong by more than half.

The Jingguang High-Speed Railway is also the only Chinese high-speed line to cross an "international" border requiring immigration and clearance, even though Hong Kong is an integral part of China. The West Kowloon Terminus, in Hong Kong, which serves as the southern terminus of the line, allows both Mainland and Hong Kong officials to conduct immigration controls within Hong Kong.
