The Hong Kong Taxi Lamborghini

Taxis on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon are readily identifiable by their red and silver-white livery, while those in the New Territories sport a green and silver-white livery, and those on Lantau Island feature a light blue and silver-white livery.

Although preferred brands and models have varied over time, the Toyota Crown Comfort became the most popular taxi in the city for over three decades following its 1995 introduction, remaining so until its eventual discontinuation. As the fleet began aging, its successor, the Toyota Comfort Hybrid, grew increasingly popular across the territory following its 2019 debut. As a matter of fact, well over 90% of all taxis in Hong Kong are made by Toyota.

However, in recent years—and with the emergence of new taxi operators—Chinese brands such as BYD and Maxus have begun gaining a foothold in Hong Kong as well. That said, if you’re lucky, you might spot a vehicle sporting the ubiquitous red and silver livery that isn’t exactly known for its passenger-carrying qualities: namely, a Lamborghini Huracán. To make matters even more confusing, this taxi doesn’t roam the streets of Hong Kong, but rather those of Toronto, Ontario, in Canada.

In fact, despite its appearance, this Lamborghini is not a working taxi, but a regular supercar owned by a Canadian-born car enthusiast with strong ties to Hong Kong. The owner created the vehicle purely for fun, serving as a piece of "remixed" cultural nostalgia to connect with the local diaspora. Consequently, the car is frequently spotted in the northern Toronto suburb of Markham, which is home to a prominent Hong Kong community.
